Protesting Blood Money Made Off the Backs of Immigrants

Scenes from the Lights for Liberty protest held at Essex County Jail on July 12, 2019

Behind this barbed wire immigrants are warehoused

Transformed into capital assets that generate funds for suburban county parks

While off in the distance New York City gleams like the emerald city of Oz

On July 12th, thousands of activists gathered at detention centers around the country to protest. At the Essex County Jail, there were over 300 people protesting.

Alternating between passionate cries of protest…

…and quiet moments of remembrance

For the people who died coming to America looking for a better life…

…and those still trapped inside cold cinder block walls

The fight goes on until the inherent dignity and humanity of our brothers and sisters is recognized
